Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprised their “True Detective’” roles in an ad aspiring to incentivize film production in Texas.
The dynamic duo teamed up for the ad shared online Wednesday to promote the Texan backdrop as the perfect place for movies to be made. The famous actors leaned on some of their famous friends to join the conversation. Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton and Renée Zellweger also guest-starred in the promotional video.
“Hollywood is a flat circle, Woody,” McConaughey said, as he slipped right back into his role as Rusty Cohle. “This industry is like somebody’s memory of an industry. I’m talking about a whole new hub for film and television. A renaissance. A rebirth.”

McConaughey went on to share his thoughts on Hollywood, saying it was full of “restrictions, regulations, nickel and diming productions.”
“Hollywood is a flat circle — round and round, like a record with the sound off,” he said.
The famous actor introduced a new way of filming.
“I want to change the tune,” he said.
Paraphrasing is character he said, “This industry is like somebody’s memory of an industry, and the memory is fading.”
McConaughey said he envisions “a whole new hub” for film and TV production in Texas, and called this opportunity “a renaissance, a rebirth.”
“A small fraction of Texas’ budget surplus can turn this state into the new Hollywood,” Harrelson said. Quaid was quick to chime in to say it would not be called Hollywood.
Zellweger chimed in to say, “If all these other states are going to offer incentives, then that’s where we’re going to keep going. I just wish we could bring some of these productions home to Texas.”
“Ain’t all that money like corporate welfare for big Hollywood studios?” Harrelson questioned.
“No, Wood, it’s not,” McConaughey said “Real Texas business owners and citizens see every dollar spent from this incentive puts $4 back into the state of Texas.”

Earlier in January, the Texas State Senate filed a budget that included $498 million for the Texas Film Incentive with the goal of “making Texas the movie capital of the world,” a statement from Republican Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick read. The budget will embrace $48 million in grants for small films and TV ads and up to $450 million for new tax credits. There will be Texas residency requirements for industry workers.
