Actor Mel Gibson said he had no idea he had been appointed as a special ambassador by Donald Trump until he read about the news on social media.
“I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised,” he said in a statement Jan. 17 to The Hollywood Reporter. “Nevertheless, I heed the call.”
The actor lost his Malibu home during the Palisades Fire that ravaged Los Angeles. He seized the opportunity to send a cheeky response to Trump.
“Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?” Gibson said.
President-elect Donald Trump announced he was naming Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone as Hollywood’s special ambassadors in a message shared Jan. 16 on Truth Social.
“They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!” Trump said.
Despite his initial shock, Gibson said he was eager to take on his newly appointed role.
“My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can,” Gibson told The Hollywood Reporter.
Trump announced the new position for his friends in Hollywood just days before his inauguration. (RELATED: Donald Trump Appoints Jon Voight, Mel Gibson And Sylvester Stallone As Special Ambassadors)
“These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!” he said.
