The 2025 Met Gala suffered a big blow Monday after Honorary Chair LeBron James bailed on the event hours before it began.
The NBA great cited an injury as the reason for his abrupt cancelation of one of the most exclusive events in the fashion industry in a post shared Monday.
“Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on!” James said.
Unable to walk the red carpet, James said, “Hate to miss an historical event! My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!”

ESPN reported May 2 that James suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee in the fourth quarter of Game 5 when he collided with the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo near the end of the game.
The Met Gala is being held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, New York. The role of a chair person for the haute couture festival includes a series of shared responsibilities, including promoting the event, and planning details surrounding the theme of the event, the meal that’s served, the ambient details, and the performances that are lined up for the evening.

The annual event fundraises for the Costume Institute. Tickets for each individual cost $75,000 and tables for multiple guests start at $350,000. Fashion houses purchase tables and invite high-powered stars as their guests.

Big names expected to attend the luxe gathering include co-chair A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Doechii, Usher, André 3000, Janelle Monáe, Zendaya and Tyla.
