This is an incredible story.
It’s safe to say Australian golfer Ryan Peake has pulled a 180 in terms of turning a wrong life into a right one. Currently 31 years old, Peake has officially qualified for The Open Championship after getting a victory Sunday in the New Zealand Open. And to make it crazier, this comes five years after he was in prison for half a decade.
Peake was a part of the Rebels motorcycle gang, and at 21 years old, he was convicted of assault. At the time of his conviction, he was a teammate of Cameron Smith, who was named 2022 Champion Golfer of the Year. When he got out of prison, he went back to golf and relaunched his career, getting help from leading coach Richie Smith in the process.
In the 2025 campaign, he landed his Australasian tour card, earning his first professional victory Sunday.
“I always knew I could do it but it was just a matter of when I was going to do it,” said Peake. “Along with my family and my team everyone believed and most of all I believed as well.”

Though I’m not in support of gangs or any of that nonsense, it’s kind of cool to go from living a life of crime as a member of a motorcycle gang, to all of a sudden qualifying for one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf.
One hell of a life right there … shoutout to Ryan Peake.
