In the moments before Luigi Mangione allegedly killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the suspect’s pistol jammed. In the time it took for the suspected killer to clear his chamber and put a round downrange, an armed would-be victim could have returned fire and ended the threat to his or her life. Unfortunately for Thompson, he was in New York City, which has some of the most stringent and unconstitutional gun laws in the country.
The far Left’s depraved response to the murder of a healthcare CEO should be illuminating for citizens of New York and other Democratic strongholds. From former New York Times and Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz’s enthusiastic endorsement of the murder to the thousands of viral posts on social media supporting the killing of other wealthy CEOs, surely there must be Americans considering firearm ownership who have never owned a gun before.
After a New York jury shockingly and correctly acquitted Daniel Penny of all wrongdoing in the death of Jordan Neely, leftist protesters outside the courthouse began threatening violence, even murder, against Penny.
“We need some black vigilantes. People wanna jump up and choke us and kill us for being loud? How about we do the same?” said Hawk Newsome, founder of Black Lives Matter Greater New York.
Other BLM representatives went on profanity-laced tirades condemning white people generally.
Justice did prevail for Penny, but his safety isn’t ensured. Conservative pundit Ryan Girdusky posted on X, “Now where does Daniel Penny go to get his life back?” to which Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) simply replied: Florida. It wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world for Penny to consider the Sunshine State. DeSantis signed constitutional carry into law last summer, meaning any noncriminal over the age of 21 can carry a gun without a permission slip from the government, and in Florida, he would be far less likely to encounter a deranged, racist, George Soros-backed district attorney such as Manhattan’s Alvin Bragg.
Earlier this year, Louisiana became the 28th state to make constitutional carry the law of the land. Over half of adults in the United States can now carry a pistol without a license, and despite the Left’s propagandistic predictions, violent crime rates drop after jurisdictions adopt constitutional carry. Ohio’s Center for Justice Research investigated the result of the state’s adoption of permitless carry in 2022 and found that the crime rate involving firearms dropped in all of Ohio’s eight major cities.
“Toledo, Parma, and Akron each experienced an average of 19% decrease in summed rates of crimes involving a firearm post-PCL (permitless carry law),” says the report.
The findings continue, “Based on data from June 2021-June 2023, the enactment of the PCL does not appear to have any appreciable effect on law enforcement injuries or deaths by firearm in the cities of interest.”

There are many reasons to abandon Democratic Party-dominated states for greener pastures. In fact, after the 2020 census, New York and California coughed up congressional districts to Florida and Texas, largely due to their state economies that are aided by effective Republican governance. Maybe Penny will take DeSantis’s advice, but if Florida isn’t your style, you have options. From Texas to Ohio, Vermont to Tennessee, dozens of states don’t attempt to prevent you from protecting yourself and your family with firearms.
If the Left’s celebration of cold-blooded murder and the threats of Leftist activists worry you, a pistol at your side and the knowledge and training to know how to use it go a long way to ease the mind in today’s contentious political and societal environment.
