Top Trump adviser Elon Musk indicated on Saturday that he hopes the United States and Europe reach a “zero tariff situation,” just days after President Donald Trump‘s “Liberation Day” announcement slapped 20% tariffs on the European Union.

Calling into an event hosted by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, Musk addressed the recent Trump tariffs, saying, “I hope it is agreed that both Europe and the United States should move, ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America.”

“That’s what I hope occurs, and also more freedom of people to move between Europe and North America if they wish, if they wish to work in Europe or wish to work in America, they should be allowed to do so, in my view. So that has certainly been my advice to the president,” Musk added.

This is not the first time Musk has commented on the sweeping reciprocal tariffs implemented earlier this week.

Earlier Saturday, he took a swipe at Trump’s top trade adviser Peter Navarro, though primarily over his degree from Harvard.

“A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing,” Musk posted on X in response to a video of Navarro talking about Trump’s tariffs. “Results in the ego/brains>>1 problem.”

Musk has lost about $31 billion in net worth since Trump announced the tariffs on Wednesday, and recent reporting has indicated he may be leaving the White House in the coming weeks.
