Former gov says he is ‘honored’ to have Trump’s support
Former New Hampshire governor Chris Sununu (R.) said Tuesday morning that he will not run for the Senate in 2026, just days after President Donald Trump expressed hope that Sununu would mount a bid.
“I’m not going to run,” Sununu told the Pulse of NH radio network. “For me and my family, it’s just not right for us.”
“I think I can be really effective as a non-candidate,” Sununu added.
Trump on Sunday endorsed Sununu to succeed retiring Democratic senator Jeanne Shaheen. “[I] met with Chris Sununu, and I support him fully. I hope he runs,” Trump told the Washington Free Beacon on Air Force One.
“I’m honored to have [Trump’s] support,” Sununu said in the Tuesday interview.
Democratic congressman Chris Pappas has already launched a campaign for the seat. On the Republican side, former Massachusetts senator Scott Brown—who ran for Senate in New Hampshire in 2014—has expressed interest.
