New York CIty’s Bryant Park holiday market engulfed in flames

A fire engulfed Bryant Park’s holiday market in New York City on Friday, with the New York Post reporting that the fire broke out at 9:20 a.m. local time.

The fire is believed to have begun at one booth but quickly spread to the surrounding stalls, according to The Independent

Nobody has been reported injured.

The Fire Department’s quick response

The fire was “approximately six feet by 40 feet long,” said the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Its Battalion Chief Joseph Castellano said that “Units then proceeded to stretch hand lines and extinguished the fire in a short amount of time. There was slight damage to the adjacent kiosk, and there was some heat impingement on the roof of the ice-skating rink behind the kiosk.”

The Fire Department issued a follow-up statement concluding that the fire “was accidental, caused by cooking oil coming in contact with combustibles.”

A Bryant Park spokesman told NBC New York that they’re “grateful for the FDNY’s quick response to the incident that occurred earlier today.”
