Former three-time boxing world champion Israel Vazquez has been diagnosed with cancer, officials announced Wednesday.
“Our hearts are heavy as we share the news that our beloved champion, Israel Vazquez, is battling cancer. A warrior in the ring and a hero in life, Israel needs our support now more than ever,” a statement from the World Boxing Council (WBC) reads.
Vazquez, known in the boxing world as “Magnifico,” retired in May 2010 after his final showdown against fellow Mexican boxer Rafael Márquez. Vazquez had a record of 44 wins, with 32 knockouts (KOs) and five losses throughout the 49 professional contests of his career.
The WBC included a link to a GoFundMe for the former boxer.
“Let’s stand united and show Israel that we’re in his corner. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact,” the statement continues.
The fundraiser has raised over $17,000 as of Friday afternoon. (RELATED: Boxer May Lose His Eye After Protecting Youngster From Brutal Beating).
“He has always been a beacon of kindness, humility, and strength, spreading joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him,” an Instagram post from @SupremeBoxing said. “He has faced each day with courage, showing us all what it means to fight for life with grace and optimism. However, his medical expenses have become overwhelming.”
“One of my best world champions – all of us are thinking of you and wishing you well, Israel. Keep punching!” Freddie Roach, Vazquez’s former trainer, wrote in the comments.
“Keep punching, Israel. Keep fighting!” Roach said in a post on his own Instagram account.
“Dear Israel – we are behind you and sending you lots of thoughts, prayers, and positivity in your fight against cancer … we are cheering for you in this fight as we have in every fight you’ve fought,” the statement continues.
Vazquez thrilled boxing audiences during the 2000s when he fought Márquez, his rival and the younger brother of boxing legend Juan Manuel Márquez, in four fights throughout his career, according to Essentially Sports.
The 46-year-old clinched the WBC super-bantamweight title twice, first in a fight against Óscar Larios in 2005 and then again in a 2007 rematch fight after previously losing it to Márquez.
