Pam Bondi will restore law and order to the Justice Department

The American people have given President-elect Donald Trump a mandate: to fight for the forgotten men and women of this country by securing our border, making America energy dominant again, and returning law and order to our communities. Under this mandate, Pam Bondi will deliver as the next attorney general.

Our work in the Senate begins with confirming Trump’s Cabinet so he can hit the ground running on Day One of his new administration. So far, Trump has selected a series of exceptional nominees who will help implement his agenda and work for the American people. Trump’s selection of Bondi as U.S. attorney general was a home run. Not only is she an extremely talented lawyer and seasoned professional, but more importantly, she is a crucial piece of Trump’s reform agenda.

I’ve known Bondi for years, and I am confident that she will serve the country well as the next U.S. attorney general. A stalwart supporter of Trump and his agenda for many years, Bondi has a long career of defending the Constitution and putting America first, especially when it comes to the border. During her time as Florida’s attorney general, she joined other attorneys general across the U.S. in suing the Obama administration for its unconstitutional executive actions on immigration policy.

At a time when America’s opioid crisis was worsening, Bondi worked tirelessly, helping to combat the widespread misuse and trafficking of deadly drugs, including fentanyl, which have devastated families and communities across the United States. It’s one of the many reasons why Trump tapped her to serve on the White House Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission in 2017, where they worked alongside other lawmakers in combatting America’s addiction crisis.

Additionally, Bondi has experience prosecuting crime, including combating human trafficking and working with local, state, and federal resources to get the worst offenders off the street.

For the past four years, under the failed leadership of Attorney General Merrick Garland, the Biden Justice Department has been unjustly weaponized against its political opponents. A once respected agency, the Justice Department went after parents who exercised their First Amendment rights at school board meetings under the auspices of the Patriot Act. Not to mention, the agency has also intimidated and levied charges against Catholics for simply practicing their faith.

The next attorney general will have a monumental task, both in scope and impact. It is imperative that we restore trust in the Justice Department. At a time when trust in America’s institutions is at a record low, these cynical and overtly political actions by the Biden administration only undermine the American people’s faith in their government, a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We must immediately halt this creep toward tyranny.

After Garland and President Joe Biden weaponized and politicized the Justice Department, the next attorney general can restore trust by shifting the department’s focus to administering justice. The next attorney general should promote a law-and-order justice system, prosecute our nation’s criminals, fight for our God-given rights, and make America safe again. I have no doubt that Bondi will be up to the task.

As a former state attorney general, I can vouch for the deep experience that Bondi has developed from serving as a state attorney general. As the chief law enforcement official in her state, she’s worked with local prosecutors to tackle complex cases and combat human trafficking, and she has provided leadership at the top. She’s more than qualified for her job.

I’m proud to support my friend Pam Bondi to be America’s next attorney general. I urge my Senate colleagues to move swiftly to consider and approve her nomination in January.

Eric Schmitt is a United States senator from Missouri.
