Jeff Baena, filmmaker and husband of actress Aubrey Plaza, died at the age of 47, TMZ reported.
Law enforcement responded to a call for a death investigation in Los Angeles around 10:30 a.m. Friday after an assistant found the “Life After Beth” director dead, TMZ reported. Baena was pronounced dead at the scene; officials told TMZ he died by suicide.
Baena received his film degree from New York University before moving to Los Angeles to launch his career. There, he worked alongside directors such as David O. Russell and Robert Zemeckis, the outlet reported. Baena directed several of his own movies, including the 2014 horror-comedy “Life After Beth,” which starred Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly and Aubrey Plaza, whom he would later marry.
The director also worked on films such as “Horse Girl” in 2020, “Spin Me Round” in 2022 and “The Little Hours” in 2017, which also starred his future wife. (RELATED: Creator Of Beloved Children’s Series ‘Thomas & Friends’ Dead At 81).
Plaza, known for her roles in “Parks and Rec,” “Agatha All Along” and “The White Lotus,” as well as guest appearances in “Criminal Minds,” announced her marriage to Baena in a 2021 Instagram post. The two met in 2011 over a game of Balderdash, according to GQ.
“So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to italia to cause some more trouble,” wrote in the casual May 7, 2021 marriage announcement.
The two married during the pandemic, Plaza told Drew Barrymore on the latter’s talk show.
“It’s a really hard thing to navigate but we’ve been together for 11 years,” Plaza said of working alongside her husband.
“The marriage thing was just a joke that went too far,” Plaza joked. “We got married on a whim. Literally decided at around 5:00 p.m. and got married at 8:30.”
The pair reportedly wore tie dye pajamas during their wedding — Plaza said Baena had gotten into making tie dye clothing during the pandemic.
