This follows companies the likes of Meta, Walmart, Lowe’s, Toyota, and Ford, among others, that rolled back their DEI practices. These companies will no longer make hiring and firing decisions based on race or any other identity while phasing out the phrase entirely.
“We’ll teach our kids civics, and we will eliminate the woke virus from the schools,” Morrisey said in his inaugural speech Monday. “And that means starting now, there will be no more DEI.”

Morrisey’s executive order cuts funding for any state institution that continues to implement DEI or holds positions under the umbrella. His office will begin a review of all DEI staff as a result. Anyone hired to a state position will not be required to disclose their pronouns, make any diversity statement, or adhere to a mandatory diversity training.
“Great work, Governor!” neighboring Missouri state auditor Shad White wrote in response.
Additionally, Morrisey signed another executive order that protected the religious exemption for vaccines from workplaces and schools.
“Governor Morrisey’s executive order is a victory for freedom! I applaud this move to protect religious exemptions for vaccines,” state Senator Chris Rose wrote on X. “I look forward to working with him to codify and make this permanent in West Virginia law.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) signed similar orders in their respective states. More efforts to root out the practice are underway in Kentucky, North Carolina, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas.
West Virginia is among the least racially diverse states, as its population is roughly 93% white.
