PITTSBURGH — On Jan. 22, Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) from North Braddock posted from her X account the following:

“It’s long been known that the true religion of the right is white supremacy and xenophobia. None of their real values are from the life and teachings of the Christ of the Christian Bible”

In response, newly sworn-in Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA) said, “None of us should take lectures from someone who has repeatedly demonstrated antisemitic behavior and is now condemning millions of her fellow citizens who simply want freedom, opportunity and secure borders.”

Colin Dunlap, a Pittsburgh-based KDKA news radio host, asked his audience the next day, “In all sincerity, if you live in Summer Lee’s district and are a Republican, how could you feel comfortable going to her office and asking for help with something?”

Dunlap went on to mention the vital constituent services people need when trying to navigate Social Security or veterans issues or any of the other federal agencies.

According to the latest Pennsylvania Department of State tabulations, there are approximately 160,000 registered Republicans who are Lee’s constituents. This means she views through the prism of racism 160,000 of the people she was elected to serve.

The duty of a member of Congress is to serve all of the people in the district no matter their race, religion, or political affiliation.

Last week, Lee said, “White supremacy is rampant in this country.”

Lee has been elected to Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District for two cycles in a row; it is a district that has an almost 2-to-1 Democrat voter registration majority. But it also has a robust majority of white voters. To be exact, 74% of her constituents are white, followed by black constituents at 15% and 4% Hispanic.

It’s a Pittsburgh-centric district that includes upper-middle suburban neighborhoods and dozens of Allegheny County municipalities. It also includes parts of rural and upper-middle-class Westmoreland County. It is all precisely gerrymandered to be a very safe seat for Democrats.

Kyle Kondik at the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia explains that given the voting history and registration in the district, “It is almost certainly too Democratic to elect a Republican.”

In short, there is no way she can lose unless she is primaried by a Democrat — hopefully one who does not take to calling the majority of her constituents racists.

Local Democrats tell me that is highly unlikely to happen for the next four years because she can vote against everything that President Donald Trump wants and be a hero. They needed to defeat her while Biden was in the White House when a contrast could be drawn.

That almost happened in the 2022 primary race, but last year, Lee won handily.

So the next time you hear Lee or any other member of the progressive “Squad” say something cringe-worthy about race and you are wondering how a sitting U.S. congresswoman can get away with calling 70% of her constituents racists, that’s why.

And the ball is in the local Democrats’ court. Republicans have run two very good candidates for the seat in the last two cycles but the voter registration numbers are a bridge too far. It is Democrats who have to find a way to win the seat in a primary with someone who is much more interested in representing the people of Pennsylvania’s 12th District than whatever Lee is doing.
