Just go away, PETA. Just go away.
While I’m writing this, the SMU Mustangs and Clemson Tigers’ football programs are squaring off in the ACC championship game in Charlotte, North Carolina. Before the contest, SMU, while traveling, brought along a live mascot. As cool as that sounds, however, not everybody is happy about it.
Prior to the game, the Mustangs announced their mascot, Peruna, will be in attendance to help push the team as they attempt to maintain an undefeated conference record. And not just that; SMU is looking to lock up a spot in the College Football Playoff. But of course, there’s always gotta be someone raining on a parade or wanting to ruin somebody’s good day. Well, in this case, it’s an entire organization — the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) — who sent a letter Friday to SMU President R. Gerald Turner demanding the college “to cancel the senseless stunt and put an end to the school’s archaic tradition of having a live mascot.”
“Ponies are prey animals whose instinct is to panic and flee from startling noises, yet SMU plans to parade this pony like a toy in front of a stadium full of screaming fans, noisemakers, and a band,” PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo stated.
Hey, @SMU, ponies are living individuals, NOT props for your championship game 😠
Ponies panic around loud noises—parading one around screaming fans & blaring music is cruel & senseless!
PLEASE cancel Peruna IX’s appearance & end your live mascot program! https://t.co/9HwvvAahU9

And here’s the best part of the story: SMU didn’t listen whatsoever and Peruna showed up to the game.
Ha!
