Democratic politicians are launching into their climate cult talking points with respect to the Los Angeles fires, because blaming an evil, invisible specter is a lot easier than reckoning with their failed policies.

President Joe Biden, less than two weeks from leaving office and fading into history as one of America’s worst presidents, said Congress must take on the financial burden of California’s recovery because “In case you haven’t noticed, there is global warming.” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) blamed climate change for Los Angeles not seeing rain in eight months. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) managed the worst take (which is normal for her), celebrating a McDonald’s restaurant burning down while blaming corporations for climate change.

This is what “climate change” is for Democrats. It is the ever-useful blame bucket that allows Democrats to try and dodge accountability for their terrible policies. When bureaucratic incompetence allows power lines to ignite invasive plants the government is allowing to grow out of control in Hawaii, Democrats blame climate change. When the water system in Democrat-run Jackson, Mississippi, collapses due to city incompetence, Democrats blame climate change. And when California has rolling blackouts after hamstringing its own energy grid with weak “green” forms of energy, Democrats blame climate change.

The same is true of these fires. For example, contrary to Bernie Sanders blaming climate change for the gods not blessing Los Angeles with rain, rainfall in Los Angeles regularly fluctuates between wet years and dry years and has for at least 150 years. But California Democrats refuse to build water storage or keep water flowing south from the northern Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in order to protect a couple of species of fish.

California has also refused to clear dead trees and brush that created the kindling necessary for these fires to burn out of control. And, typically, these fires are caused by people, rather through carelessness or arson (or homeless fires in Los Angeles), not by an act of the climate gods. Los Angeles police even arrested a man riding a bicycle around the city with a blowtorch allegedly trying to light trash cans and old Christmas trees on fire in the area of the Kenneth fire that flared up Thursday.

Democrats do not want to talk about any of this, though, because it reflects poorly on the California and Los Angeles Democrats who are responsible for all of these issues. Instead, they want to blame your gas car so they can ban you from buying one or blame corporations like McDonald’s so they can take regulatory control of them. The climate cult of the Democratic Party is a cynical power play, not a sincere concern about the forever changing climate of the Earth, and that is how it has always been.
