Since 2009, the British Open hasn’t been held at President Donald Trump‘s Trump Turnberry, but the golf governing body that is the head of the major championship, the R&A, wants to throw the course back into rotation.
Speaking at the 2025 British Open launch event, with the tournament being hosted at Royal Portrush, R&A chief executive Mark Darbon stated that he’d “love” if The Open was played again at Turnberry, and he wants it to happen soon.
Getting into his position at the R&A in 2024, Darbon said that the biggest hurdles for making this happen are logistical issues. (RELATED: President Trump Supports High School In Battle To Defeat Woke Nonsense)
“A modern Open Championship is a large-scale event. What we know for sure is the golf course is brilliant, so at some point we’d love to be back there,” said Darbon, per the BBC. “We consistently work with our venues and their owners and operators to talk about what an Open Championship demands and how we work with them to bring that to life.”
With that being said, Darbon says work is already being done to bring The Open back to Trump Turnberry.
“At Turnberry, there are definitely some logistical and commercial challenges that we face around the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure,” continued Darbon. “We’re doing some feasibility work around what it would look like to return to that venue and the investment that it would require.”
