Janet Jackson appears to be facing the fallout after making incorrect comments about Kamala Harris’ race, ostensibly apologizing, then stating the apology was fake.
The famous singer is in the center of a chaotic situation that is already proving to be a true PR disaster. It began when The Guardian published an interview Sunday with Jackson. She responded to a question about Harris by saying, “She’s not black. That’s what I heard … that she’s Indian.”
It didn’t end there.
She went on to say, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.” A man named Mo Elmasri issued an apology on Jackson’s behalf to BuzzFeed, but her camp says Elmasri is not one of her representatives. In fact, they claim they have no idea who he is at all, according to Variety.
Sources close to the situation said Jackson and her brother Randy opted to leave the hot topic alone.
“Janet and Randy’s attitude was to just let it blow over. They weren’t planning to address it,” the source told Page Six.
The matter became more complicated when another source came forward with allegations against Randy and suggested he was partially to blame for this web of confusion and mismanagement.
“[Randy’s] sabotaging her legacy because he’s not savvy,” the individual said, according to Page Six.
“She’s giving Randy control, and no one understands how he’s managing her, when he’s never had a career,” the source said.
The source also said Janet listens to what Randy says and he is a “Trump supporter and conspiracy theorist.”
“Janet’s bubble is small, and she listens to Randy. She does peddle in conspiracy theories,” the source said, according to Page Six.
Janet referred to Randy as her manager during the interview with The Guardian and indicated that he is controlling her career. Jackson was asked why she hasn’t released new music she had teased as part of her “Black Diamond” album prior to the 2020 pandemic and she appeared to blame Randy.
“I feel so badly about that … I have recorded a lot of music. A lot of music that’s just sitting on the shelf. I went to my brother [Randy] … and I think, I think he’s just waiting for the opportune time,” Jackson told The Guardian. As for the comments about Harris, the last direct statement issued by Jackson was the incorrect racial labeling.
