After reportedly being awarded over $500,000, a woman from Sugar Land, Texas, is hopeful that the decision from the civil court will pop out a loud-and-clear message to a suspect of road rage.

Recently, Kiana Akhlaghi was victorious in her civil court trial taking on Abdullah Olajuwon. If the name looks recognizable, that’s due to him being the son of NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon.

Akhlaghi stated the trial stemmed from what took place in April 2022. When she was driving in Sugar Land on the Southwest Freeway, she said she was nearly hit by another vehicle, sending her into a traumatized state. “I didn’t react the best,” recalled Akhlaghi, per ABC13. “I got angry. I honked at him, and I flipped him off.”

After Akhlaghi took the Sweetwater exit, she ended up having to stop at a light. That’s when, according to Akhlaghi, the driver got out of the other vehicle and allegedly started choking her, according to the outlet.

“It was the most dehumanizing situation of my life,” said Akhlaghi, per ABC13. “There’s something different about someone putting their hands around your neck. It’s like they want to control you.”

Steve Shellist, the attorney of Akhlaghi, stated that Olajuwon was hit with a misdemeanor charge of assault. With that being said, if you look through public court records, there’s no available information, the outlet noted.

ABC13 spoke with the district attorney’s office who didn’t give confirmation to the case nor deny its existence. Per Shellist, it’s due to Olajuwon being a first-time offender and undergoing a pre-trial program, resulting in his records being removed.

This is what sparked up the civil case for Akhlaghi, which saw her win more than $500,000.
