Multiple people required medical attention after attending an opera that featured real blood, explicit same-sex sex scenes and a gruesome, intentionally inflicted wound, according to the Daily Mail.

“Sancta,” adapted by Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger from an early 20th-century show titled, “Sancta Susanna,” premiered at the Stuttgart State Opera in Austria in October. It was so overwhelming for some viewers that 18 audience members required medical treatment after suffering from nausea and shock, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

The show included provocative, radical scenes involving naked roller-skating nuns, multiple sex acts and a combination of both real and fake blood.

A real piece of flesh is cut from a woman’s body and grilled medium rare to illustrate the Eucharist, the body of Christ in one of the scenes, according to German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Other dizzying scenes include bodies strung on a wall mimicking the body of Christ on the cross, as vats of fake blood are poured down onto them. An actress playing Jesus spanked a nude woman and other nude performers sang while one pushed a sword shaped like a crucifix down her throat, according to the Daily Mail.

At one point during the show, an actress with dwarfism dressed up as the Pope and was suspended in the air and spun around using a robotic arm, while another performed Eminem songs while dressed as Jesus.

The theater issued trigger warnings for the content featured within the three-hour show that has no breaks, but it still proved to be too much for some attendees.

A spokesperson for the opera said the guests that were affected by the graphic nature of the show were seated in the rows nearest to the stage and cautioned they would have known “what they are letting themselves in for” before attending the experience, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The original “Sancta Susanna” by composer Paul Hindemith caused a scandal back in 1921. (RELATED: ‘She The Devil’: Pop Star Releases New Song Featuring Demonic Imagery)

Both renditions have faced backlash over the extreme content that has been deemed “blasphemous” by many.
