Eight out of 10 defendants were reportedly found guilty Friday in connection to the 2016 armed robbery involving Kim Kardashian in Paris, France.
Authorities accused one woman and nine men of plotting and following through with the robbery, according to NBC News. Two men allegedly entered Kardashian’s residence and bound her by the ankles while one held her at gunpoint during Fashion Week. The thieves made off with $9 million worth of jewelry in a shocking heist, including a 20-carat diamond ring she received from her ex-husband, Kanye West, now named Ye, and lost a large cross in the escape, according to prosecutors.
Most of the defendants are in their 60s and 70s and are known as “les papys braqueurs” — reportedly the ‘grandpa robbers.’
The court convicted Aomar Ait Khedache of theft with a weapon and holding the victim in sequestration without voluntary liberation, according to NBC News. He was allegedly a longtime part of the underworld of Paris. Harminy Ait Khedache, his son, was convicted of complicity in escape and committing larceny with threat of a weapon.
Fleurus Heroui was convicted of forgery, but Gary Madar was found not guilty of conspiracy and involvement in the escape. Christiane Glotin, girlfriend to Khedache, was convicted of conspiracy and involvement in the escape.
“I am deeply grateful to the French authorities for pursuing justice in this case,” Kardashian said in a statement.
“The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family. While I’ll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all.”
“I absolutely did think I was going to die,” Kardashian said while testifying in court last week, NBC News reported.
“I have babies. I have to make it home. They can take everything. I just have to make it home,” she recounted thinking at the time.
Prosecutors have requested 10 years’ imprisonment for Khedache, Abbas, Didier Dubreucq and Marc-Alexander Boyer.
“I have nothing but regrets to offer you and will take my responsibilities,” Abbas said before the court Friday.
Khedache is both deaf and mute and must use the bathroom hourly because of a medical condition. He issued an apology to Kardashian as she took the stand.
“The past cannot be undone, but I hope that this letter will enable you to gradually forget the trauma you have experienced through my fault,” the letter said, according to NBC News.
Kardashian responded by saying, “I forgive you for what had taken place but it doesn’t change the emotions, the feeling and the trauma and the fact that my life has forever changed.” (RELATED: Video Seems To Capture Suspects Robbing Woody Harrelson, Bill Maher’s Weed Shop)
The court convicted a ninth defendant of unlawful acquisition and possession of firearms but ruled they were not involved in the robbery while the tenth was acquitted due to insufficient evidence, according to The New York Times.
Abbas wrote a book about the incident titled “I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian.”
