Disney continues breaking barriers better left intact.
Andor, the Star Wars prequel series streaming on Disney+, debuted the franchise’s first-ever attempted rape scene — the attempted rape of an illegal migrant by a law enforcement officer, no less.
“I know you’re illegal. We’ve been counting visas. It’s a tough spot for everyone,” the Imperial Officer tells the illegal migrant (played by Adria Arjona), according to Entertainment Weekly. He proceeds to proposition her. When the (literal) alien rejects him, he forces himself on her, before she miraculously kills a man twice her size in typical Hollywood fashion.
The scene has received mixed reviews from fans.
One X account dedicated to science fiction praises the show for depicting “the world WE live in…this is Star Wars at its most political, its most potent, its most frightening.”
#Andor dared to go to the darkest places Star Wars could offer. An Imperial Officer abusing his untouchable status to rape an undocumented migrant, while his troops are rounding up other undocumented citizens. Other fans objected, citing inconsistency with Darth Vader’s canonically upstanding moral standards.
“Vader wouldn’t tolerate [sexual assault],” wrote an X user, “nor does the Empire condone it.”
Murderous nature aside, that Vader seems like a pretty nice guy. Regardless, Andor is the latest in a long string of attempts to lecture to the public from the television. This surely appeals only to the small contingent of ideologues who can’t distinguish TV from real life. (RELATED: ‘Snow White’ Is So Bad That Even Hollywood Optimists Issued Scathing Reviews)
“Wow, a strong, independent woman who happens to be an illegal alien? Who happens to be the victim of sexual assault? Powerful and original stuff,” says the hypothetical target audience.
Can Disney really afford more ham-fisted political messages? Audiences recoiled at the prospect of Rachel Zegler, the actress better known for her “woke” public comments, as Snow White, making for an embarrassing $43 million at the box office opening weekend. The budget for the film ballooned to over $250 million by end of production, according to the Associated Press.
In any case, it’s troubling to learn border security continues to plague empires, even in galaxies far, far, away. Perhaps they should consider building some sort of galactic wall — if only to protect illegal migrants from the predations of malicious space cops.
