SEC Athletic Departments Still Pushing Diversity Quests Despite DEI Offices Being Nixed

In the words— actually, word of Charles Barkley: “Turrible.”

When it comes to DEI offices, a lot of universities in the SEC have shut down operations over the past few years, but it appears there’s still some shady business going on.

Let’s start with the University of Texas, obviously in the Lone Star State where DEI is now illegal. In January 2024, the state’s governor, Greg Abbott, signed a law which closed the doors of DEI offices in all public colleges across Texas. Since then, there’s been nearly no sign of anything DEI-related on the campus of the University of Texas.

That’s how it should be, but other universities in the SEC don’t seem to be getting the idea.

The University of Georgia might not have a DEI office any longer, but they have something similar to it. (RELATED: PETA Demands SMU Stop Using Live Mascots, But Can They Please Shut Up Already?)

Currently, “ideological tests, affirmations, and oaths, including diversity statements” are banned in relation to decision-making for admissions. This comes after the University System of Georgia (USG) voted to nix DEI in university hiring processes and training for teachers.

Despite all of that, however, the University of Georgia has an office branded the “Office of Inclusive Excellence” which has a mission to “increase enrollment of underrepresented students at undergraduate and graduate levels.”

Now let’s take a trip to Fayetteville, where it’s pretty much the same situation at the University of Arkansas. The college nixed its DEI offices in 2023, but the athletic department has continued its diversity missions with their “Hogs United” advocacy group. Their main focus is centered around hiring and retention, according to its official website.

Earlier in 2024, Louisiana State University was another college to take down DEI language from both its website and mission statement, but it also has something called the “Athletics Culture and Engagement Council,” which is designed “for team members to come together to foster an atmosphere that seeks and cultivates diverse perspectives while promoting equity and inclusion.”

Just more shady tactics from our universities. Shocker.
