The secret service shot a man outside the White House soon after midnight Sunday, a spokesperson said.
“Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9,” Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said on X.
Prior to the shooting, local police learned of a suicidal individual who may have been traveling from Indiana to Washington D.C., a press release stated. Secret Service members then found the individual’s parked car near 17th and F Street, NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and saw a person walking nearby matching the description.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the release stated.
The man was transported to a local hospital and his condition is unknown as of Sunday afternoon. There were no reported injuries to the Secret Service.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division is set to investigate the incident, according to the Secret Service.
President Donald Trump was not at the White House at the time of the incident, according to the New York Post. The president is currently staying at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
There was another incident where the Secret Service shot a man near the Capitol during Trump’s first term. The agency said a 51-year-old man approached a Secret Service member and informed the officer that he had a weapon in August 2020. “The suspect then turned around, ran aggressively towards the officer, and in a drawing motion, withdrew the object from his clothing. He then crouched into a shooter’s stance as if about to fire a weapon. The Secret Service officer discharged his weapon striking the individual in the torso,” a statement read.
The suspect and officer were transported to local hospitals following the shooting.
Trump was in the middle of a press conference at the time of the shooting. He was rushed out and remained in the Oval Office before law enforcement officers were able to get the situation under control. The president then returned to the press conference to address the situation.
