Get ’em, Ted!
USA Fencing got placed on the hot seat recently after a female fencer, Stephanie Turner, outright refused to take on a biological male in a competition. Her opponent, a transgender athlete, is allowed to be in the women’s category, per USA Fencing policy.
Speaking of that policy, USA Fencing is obviously lenient on allowing trans athletes to compete against females, saying that eligibility is ruled by their “gender identity.” In other words, they completely go against science and reality.
Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, the Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, issued a letter to USA Fencing that demands they end their current policy and nix biological males from their women’s category. The letter was obtained by OutKick.
“It has come to my attention that USA Fencing is still permitting men to compete in women’s fencing in violation of federal law,” wrote Cruz. (RELATED: Female Fencer Stephanie Turner Lands Huge Honor After Refusing To Take On Male Competitor)
An independent organization, USA Fencing doesn’t get any federal funding, but they are the NGB — National Governing Body — when it comes to fencing in the United States of America. In other words, they have to comply with the law of the land on a federal basis, per Cruz, or be at risk of having their NGB status snatched away.
“To remain [the fencing NGB, USA Fencing] must comply with United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee rules and procedures, its statutory obligations to protect women, and President Trump’s recent Executive Order (EO) on Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports. If it does not, and instead continues to put women at risk, Congress may be forced to terminate USA Fencing’s NGB certification,” reads the letter.
Cruz makes the argument — the correct one, at that — that males have a physical advantage over women and it makes competition unfair and unsafe for the latter.
“Male fencers naturally possess inherent advantages over potential female competitors. Men tend to be taller, have greater muscle mass, and more testosterone—all advantages for fencing movements like lunges, jumping, or leg power measures,” reads the letter.
