Democrats sarcastically deflected President Donald Trump’s claims during the election about abortions after birth, and yet that is precisely the line they continue to draw with abortion legislation.
Senate Democrats again blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, a rare high-profile bill that does exactly what its name suggests (unlike the Affordable Care Act or Inflation Reduction Act). Here is how the bill is summarized by the liberal, pro-abortion New York Times: “The bill would require that infants born alive after an attempted abortion receive the same protection under the law and degree of care as any newborn baby.”
This is pretty straightforward because, as my colleague Tim Carney pointed out, a baby born alive after an attempted abortion is a newborn baby. This isn’t some trick or backdoor abortion ban playing on legal technicalities. It is about ensuring that babies who survive an abortion and are born are treated like any other baby who is born, afforded the protections they deserve.
This also isn’t some unnecessary, redundant piece of legislation designed to prove a point. It is a response to actual Democratic policies and priorities on abortion. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act came into fruition after Virginia Democrats moved to eliminate restrictions on even third-term abortions. Defending the repeal, then-Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA) described what he thought the law should look like.
“If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen,” Northam said. “The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
In other words, the baby would be born and resuscitated, “and then a discussion would ensue” about how best to get rid of it if that is what the mother wanted.

That is what the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is designed to outlaw. Northam openly and nonchalantly defended infanticide as what Virginia Democrats wanted state abortion policy to be. So, Republicans acted to ensure that babies that abortionists fail to kill are given the lifesaving care they need. Year after year, Senate Democrats block those protections while ranting and raving about the human right to be able to kill your baby or let it die if it manages to be born against your will.
Remember this next time liberal media such as NPR or ABC News arrogantly “fact check” any criticism of the Democratic Party’s abortion fanaticism being radical. The Democratic Party does not believe in any restriction on abortion whatsoever, even if the baby has already been born.
