St. Louis Blues forward Dylan Holloway was hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a neck injury during a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Holloway took a puck to the right side of his neck late in the first period and initially seemed unfazed, continuing his shift as usual. Cameras then caught the NHL player tilting his neck awkwardly as he returned to the bench for a line change, prompting the assistance of emergency medics as trainer Ray Barile stabilized Holloway’s neck.
The hockey player was stretchered off and taken to a local hospital while worried teammates looked on.
Holloway’s teammates slammed their sticks against the ice in a display of support and the crowd applauded as he was wheeled away to receive medical attention.
Officials ended the first period with 1:11 left on the clock and carried the time over to the second period, prioritizing the situation at hand.
“I was just sitting beside him and saw something was happening,” Blues forward Alexey Toropchenko said, according to The Associated Press (AP). “Doctors came in and, like, I think everything is good right now. But we were worried, everybody.”
Blues coach Drew Bannister also spoke about the incident and the concern felt by Holloway’s teammates.
“I think the only way I can put it is if you’re at work, and you get a call, and one of your family members is sick, and you rush to the hospital,” he explained.
“Holly’s a family member. That was tough. I thought we, as a group, showed a lot of fortitude, and the way mentally being able to push through that, because the easiest thing to do is your head goes somewhere else. But, we were able to get updates on Holly and kind of put our minds at ease a little bit and refocus ourselves,” he said, according to the outlet.
The St. Louis Blues provided an update on Holloway’s condition, telling fans he was alert and in a stable condition at the hospital.
St. Louis rallied to win the game in Holloway’s honor, scoring three goals after falling behind 1-0 early in the second period. They beat out Tampa Bay with a final score of 3-2. (RELATED: Former Pro Hockey Player Janne Puhakka Found Dead In His Home. Police Reportedly Suspect Murder)
