Jason “Sundance” Head, the Season 11 winner of “The Voice,” spoke out after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach during a solo camping trip Friday.
Head detailed the incident in two videos shared to his Facebook page Monday, explaining that his .22-caliber revolver had slipped from his backpack and discharged, resulting in the injury. He said the revolver was stored in a quick-draw holster with no strap.
“I was sure that I was going to die,” he said. “It was one of the craziest things that’s ever happened to me.”
“That revolver slid out of the case and it hit the doorjamb on the Jeep on the floor step and it shot me … I reached my hand in my pocket in my blue jeans to get my phone, and my pockets were already full of blood,” Head continued.
Head also shared a shocking image of the blood-soaked shirt he was wearing at the time of the accidental shooting.
Realizing there was no one nearby to help him, the singer ran across the property and jumped a fence to reach the highway for aid. He said he felt devastated after locking eyes with drivers who passed him by, leaving him in his bloody, vulnerable state. Eventually, a few good Samaritans stopped and rushed to his aid.
“I also want to thank the people that were on Highway 84 that stopped to help me,” he said. “Without you I don’t think I was going to make it, man. I was bleeding out.”
“He was like an angel from heaven. I was never so glad to see somebody in my life,” the singer said.
Head’s agent, Trey Newman, confirmed that Head was airlifted to the UT Health Tyler hospital in Texas, according to USA Today. He confirmed that the bullet missed his vital organs and was lodged in a fatty tissue area of his stomach.
“I’m not sure exactly what’s going to go on. All I know is I didn’t die,” he said. “I still have a bullet in me.” (RELATED: ‘Am I Gonna Die?’: Police Sergeant Reveals Details Behind Moment Alleged Robber Shot Ricky Pearsall)
The singer is now recovering at home and assured fans he plans to return to music and resume his tour as soon as his health allows.
