The Left’s unorthodoxy created the Hegseth problem for itself

During a season of Cabinet picks from President-elect Donald Trump, allegations of sexual misbehavior have taken a front seat. It is clear that the Left’s own marriage unorthodoxy has made possible the situations against which it rages.

At the moment, those on the Left are particularly upset with Pete Hegseth, the nominee for secretary of defense. Every force opposed to his confirmation is making an effort to thwart it, from accusations of rape to smear campaigns about alcoholism.

The greatest ire settles on the likely false story of Hegseth sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel conference and is wound up with the argument that he is unqualified because of his reckless sleeping around.

Usually, it is the hope of conservatives that politics will one day return to character judgment that factors in adultery. In this case, it comes from a group whose entire social agenda has worked against marriage norms for the causes of such things as free love and gay rights. Opposition has mounted for the sake of self-protection rather than for truth.

When Democrats wonder that pro-Trump Republicans seem unbothered by sexual assault allegations, they are noting the sexual nonchalance that they advocate. The immediate hesitation, among supporters of figures such as Hegseth, to condemn a scenario of casual sex comes from a few places: For one, the “MeToo” caucus has become tiresome and implicative of a certain unwelcome feminist angle. After that, politics is still politics — a man can do his job even with a distasteful personal history, and more so, he can reform. But pertinent to the Left’s contributions, the initial reaction to such news is something like, “It’s probably just debauchery. That’s normal.”

It is a special form of irony that sees cries for a baseline level of character come from the side of politics that works to break down the institutions that provide the structure for it. There is no way to reconcile the normalization of polygamy, not to mention divorce, gay partnership, cohabitation, and all the rest, with anything but a morally confused society. They cannot expect a swift turn against Hegseth from the Right, especially as they collude to lie about the matter.

As for many, Hegseth’s affairs have been hardly an obstacle to career advancement up until the point that he gains an opportunity for political power. And the only reason these conditions hold is the hand the Left has had in undermining marriage. There is a reason we look to the institution for a stable society — the Left’s openness has created this problem for itself.
