The Martin Center Hosts Free Webinar Featuring Author Ilana Redstone on “The Certainty Trap”

Raleigh, NC — The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal has announced an upcoming webinar featuring Dr. Ilana Redstone, sociologist, professor, and author of The Certainty Trap: Why We Need to Question Ourselves More―and How We Can Judge Others Less. This virtual event will take place on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 2:30 to 3:30 PM EST and is free to attend with prior registration.

Dr. Redstone, a professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and co-founder of the Mill Institute at the University of Austin, is a prominent advocate for open inquiry and viewpoint diversity. Her work highlights the dangers of ideological certainty and promotes constructive dialogue as a means to tackle political polarization and foster social trust.

The webinar will explore key themes from The Certainty Trap, including how entrenched beliefs and rigid thinking hinder meaningful conversations in higher education, politics, and society. Attendees will gain insights into fostering a culture of open inquiry and improving discourse on controversial topics.

“Dr. Redstone’s perspective is vital for addressing today’s most pressing challenges, especially in higher education, where open inquiry and civil discourse are paramount,” said Jenna Robinson, president of the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal. “We’re thrilled to host this conversation and encourage educators, students, and members of the public to join us.”
