You can always count on Watergate journalist Bob Woodward for some explosive revelations, but they usually serve to make Republicans look bad. His latest doozy, however, drives a dagger into the heart of the Democratic Party.
Woodward’s making the rounds for his latest book, “War,” which paints a tumultuous picture of U.S. foreign policy in Ukraine and the Middle East. While the book primarily focuses on the Biden administration, there’s no shortage of shots taken at Donald Trump and his supposed “shadow presidency.” Yet the real revelation here is not that President Joe Biden allegedly privately called Trump a “fucking asshole,” but what he thinks of his former boss.
“They fucked up in 2014,” Biden told a friend, according to Woodward. “That’s why we are here. We fucked it up. Barack never took Putin seriously.” (RELATED: Biden Appears To Take Swipe At Obama Over Gay Marriage Policy)
Biden’s referring to Russia’s invasion of Crimea during the Obama administration. Obama was famously lenient on Russia, caught on a hot mic pledging “more flexibility” after his 2012 reelection and mocking Mitt Romney for taking Putin seriously. So it’s not surprising that Putin calculated he could walk right into Crimea and suffer only a slap on the wrist from the U.S. And it’s no wonder that Putin figured he could do it all again in Obama’s unofficial third term.
Biden actually deserves some credit here. I’m not saying we have any interest digging ourselves into an un-winnable proxy war in Ukraine today. But I am saying we should have never found ourselves in this situation in the first place. While Obama won gushing praise as an enlightened, new-age geopolitical genius, it turns out Old Grandpa Joe had the right idea all along. If only the Obama administration had taken Russia (and its interests) seriously, then we likely would not currently be staring down the barrel of World War III.
This just goes to show that the Democratic Party isn’t chock full of joy and unity as they claim. It’s long been reported that Obama holds a pretty dim view of his former vice president. Now, it’s clear that the feeling is mutual.
