Let’s get ready to rumble!
A completely ignorant lawsuit in the name of so-called “discrimination” is still being pushed by a transgender powerlifter, and it’s unfortunately made it all the way to the Minnesota Supreme Court. A biological male identifying as a woman, JayCee Cooper slapped USA Powerlifting with a lawsuit back in 2021 after the transgender was denied from being on the women’s team three years beforehand. Cooper made allegations in the complaint that the entity is in violation of the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
“It’s just basic discrimination law that you can’t pick out people based on who they are, based on averages, generalizations and stereotypes about what their bodies are like,” stated one of Cooper’s lawyers, Jess Braverman. “That’s true for cis-gendered women, it’s true for transgender women, and we want to make sure that law is enforced.”
When we got to 2023, a judge from the Ramsey County District Court ruled with Cooper, which required USA Powerlifting to “cease and desist from all unfair discriminatory practices” when it comes to gender identity and sexual orientation.

Earlier in 2024, USAPL appealed the decision, leading to a partial overturning from the Minnesota Court of Appeals. That decision sparked up a counter-appeal from Cooper, sending the case to the Minnesota Supreme Court. And here we are.
“What the Minnesota Court of Appeals said is that Minnesota does prohibit discrimination against transgender people, but that they were not sure whether that’s what happened here,” said Braverman. “They were not sure whether what USAPL did constitutes discrimination.”

Now, that case has reached the Minnesota Supreme Court.
