A country is not merely an economic zone. Nor is it a resettlement camp. The American left understands this perfectly well in the context of Mexico or Ukraine or Sudan. They have extraordinary trouble with the concept as applied to their own country. Out of ignorance, or misplaced empathy, or pure malice, they protest: “What about the illegal migrants who’ve never committed a crime?” All illegal migrants are, by definition, criminals. They have flouted the laws of the United States. The administration has every right — and every responsibility — to show them the door as swiftly as possible. 

At every turn, the left is putting up roadblocks. More than 18 million illegal migrants dwell within our borders, according to a recent estimate from the Federation for American Immigration Reform. U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has about 21,000 employees. Deporting such vast swaths of people would be a daunting challenge even with the full-throated support of local governments. But these are not our circumstances. In cities across America, elected officials are pulling out all the tricks to hamstring Trump’s deportation efforts. Their justifications are stunning.
