President Donald Trump hinted at who might carry the torch after his administration, offering praise for Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio — while saying he’s not eyeing a third term.

In a May 4 interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump was asked about his political future and the next generation of Republican leadership.

“It’s far too early to say that. But, you know, I do have a vice president … and JD’s doing a fantastic job,” Trump said. “I don’t want to get involved in that. I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. There’s a lot of them that are great. We have a lot of good people in this party.”

While some corners of the conservative movement have pushed for Trump to explore a third term — despite the clear constraints of the 22nd Amendment — the president appeared to downplay the possibility.

“I will say this. So many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that,” Trump added. “But it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.”

The 22nd Amendment prohibits a person from being elected president more than twice. Some constitutional scholars argue, however, it might not bar someone from assuming the office through other means.

The president’s nod to Rubio, who was recently tapped as interim national security adviser while retaining his roles as secretary of State and head of USAID, adds intrigue. The Florida senator’s elevated presence comes after years of political evolution — from primary-season sparring in 2016 to a stable, strategic alliance. Rubio and Vance now stand among the most visible standard-bearers of the post-Trump GOP, and Trump’s comments suggest he sees a viable path forward for both.
