Trump Or Deep State: Collapse In Syria Will Show Who’s Really In Charge

Trump Reminds Us What A Real Foreign Policy Looks Like Trump Reminds Us What A Real Foreign Policy Looks Like

Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is out of power after 24 years, landing safely in Moscow to start a new life. This is the day the liberal West has long hoped for, another dictator overthrown leaving room for another burgeoning democracy. They should be careful what they wish for.

President Joe Biden spoke for the entire Western world when he issued his naive statement of joy and optimism for the Syrian people.

“At long last, the Assad regime has fallen.  This regime brutalized and tortured and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. A fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice.  It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country. It’s also a moment of risk and uncertainty.  As we all turn to the question of what comes next, the United States will work with our partners and the stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage the risks.”

Yes, Assad sucked, but there’s no reason to believe the rebel insurgency that deposed him will be any better, both in terms of American interests or the interests of the Syrian people. Remember, we armed, funded and trained the mujahideen to fight the Soviets in the 80’s, before that same movement turned around and landed the most devastating blow on U.S. soil in the history of our country. We intervened to overthrow Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, only to see Iraq and Libya turn into hotbeds of terrorism in the power vacuum that ensued. And we already know that Syria is ground zero for terrorism, having birthed ISIS the last time the country went through a major upheaval. Now we’re not only cheering the rebels who hate us under the fantasy that they’ll become dutiful Western liberals, but actively plan to aid them. They might agree with us that Assad is bad, but like all radical Islamists, it’s the West that is the real enemy.

Donald Trump alone seems to be the only Western leader to understand this. “Syria is a mess, but is not our friend,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, and “THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”

Ding, ding, ding: Correct Answer. But can he withstand the rest of the Western world pressuring him to go against his gut?

As the inevitable chaos proceeds in Syria in the early days of the new administration, Trump will face his first decisive foreign policy test. Can he truly wield power as chief executive and  command the sweeping foreign policy establishment and intel services, with aims of their own and decades of experience manipulating the levers of bureaucracy? Or will the Deep State take control? Only time will tell, but it will be a bad sign for Trump if he once again gets thwarted by a Deep State that will do anything to see U.S. blood and treasure spilled in Syria.
