An apartment building in Massachusetts partially collapsed onto the snow-covered ground Sunday while still under construction, a doorbell camera video shows.
One end of the building in Brookline seemed to peel off from the rest of it and collapse, the video — aired by CBS Boston — shows. The collapse occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m., according to the CBS News.
The top two floors of the unoccupied three-story building collapsed and several buildings nearby had to be evacuated, the Brookline Police Department said. Responders from the Brookline Fire Department (BFD) were at the scene.
The building may have collapsed due to the weight of heavy snow, officials told the outlet. A woman said bricks from the collapsed portion crushed her car while it was warming up but added that she was not in it at the time. “I was just screaming, saying, ‘My neighbors! My neighbors!’ I thought they were in the car. But luckily no one was there and it seems like no one was hurt,” Rym Baouendi, a neighbor, told the outlet. Baouendi was shoveling her sidewalk feet from where the collapsed portion came down, according to the outlet.
Oleg Chodovsky, whose Ring camera captured the collapse, told the outlet he was pleased that the authorities would tear the rest of the building down as it could collapse in high winds.
The windy and snowy conditions made cleanup difficult, the BFD told CBS News.
“The slip and falls, the debris field in the back is extensive,” BFD Deputy Kyle McEachern explained. “That is playing a part, too, and obviously the safety concern of another collapse.”
External events — including extreme weather conditions and vehicular crashes — and lackluster construction and maintenance caused most building failures in the U.S. between 1989 and 2000, according to a study.
