WaPo Columnist Gets On His High Horse To Defend Legacy Media Only To Ignore Its Biggest Failure WaPo Columnist Gets On His High Horse To Defend Legacy Media Only To Ignore Its Biggest Failure

The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple got on his high horse Friday to defend legacy media’s treatment of Democratic candidates, only to ignore one of the media’s biggest failures in a decade.

Wemple defended “mainstream media outlets” for their interviews and coverage of the 2024 election and Democratic candidates while also praising corporate reporters for working “in a dying industry trying to breathe life into an endangered democracy.” But the WaPo media columnist notably failed to mention CBS News’s selective editing of a signature Kamala Harris word salad that occurred during the interview. Worse yet, he ignored the biggest media debacle since the WMD lies: the censorship and non-coverage of Hunter Biden’s laptop in October 2020. “Right-wing thinkers spent a half-century telling their audiences that mainstream media outlets were garbage entities committed to promoting Democratic candidates. Yet when Harris in the early weeks of her candidacy sidestepped those same outlets, conservative media howled about the depravity of it all. And then, after ’60 Minutes’ correspondent Bill Whitaker grilled Harris earlier this week, right-wing media outlets hyped the accountability moments, even as Trump bailed on his ’60 Minutes’ interview,” Wemple wrote, before referencing the Daily Caller’s headline on the Harris interview. “The American right would do well to acknowledge that the reviled mainstream media has a history of going after anyone who dares mount a presidential campaign,” he goes on to say.

Ah, the “mainstream media has a history of going after anyone who dares mount a presidential campaign”? Not so sure about that. Corporate media dismissed one of the biggest, if not the biggest, stories of the 2020 campaign because their pals in the national security blob claimed Hunter’s laptop was Russian disinformation. Did liberal reporters try to verify the emails themselves? No, of course not. At least not for months, even years later, well after the election. The New York Times didn’t admit to the laptop’s authenticity until 2022. The Washington Post also didn’t confirm the Hunter Biden laptop until 2022, nearly a year-and-a-half after the Daily Caller News Foundation verified a key email.

We still haven’t heard any apology or an admission of gross incompetence from legacy media outlets and reporters for their failures in 2020. And we’re still waiting. Until then, no one on the right will acknowledge corporate media’s allegedly dogged coverage of Democrats, nor will anyone on the right so much as shed a tear for all those intrepid reporters who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to save democracy.
