The Washington Post is once again complaining about the possible suppression of Democrat and liberal voices online, even though for years social media companies blatantly censored conservatives on their platforms.
A WaPo analysis found that Republicans have been going mega-viral on X since Elon Musk took over and pointed to GOP lawmakers such as Rep. Matt Gaetz, Sen. Josh Hawley and Sen. Ted Cruz raking in hundreds of thousands of new followers in the Musk era. (RELATED: Regime Media Finally Notices The Censorship Apparatus That Has Nuked Conservatives For Years)
“It’s almost impossible to say whether X is explicitly suppressing Democrats, as some liberals have speculated: The Post’s analysis turned up no evidence of direct manipulation. The shift in attention could reflect changing attitudes among users who have stuck around, given that many left-wing users have said they left the platform of their own accord, annoyed by Musk’s antics and X’s redrawn rules,” WaPo reported.
“Right-wing tweeters have clearly benefited under Musk’s reign. Nearly all of the 33 tweets with more than 20 million views since last summer came from Republicans, the analysis shows. The most viral posts, from the House Judiciary Committee and its chair Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio), warned ‘you’re not safe in Democrat-run Philadelphia’ and included a meme relating to the bogus Trump-repeated claim that Haitian migrants in Ohio were eating cats,” the outlet went on to say.
Yes, it’s all speculation from WaPo on whether Musk tipped the scales on purpose, though they are quite close to flat-out stating that the Trump-backing billionaire and X are censoring Democrats since the owner has so much stake in November’s election. Nowhere in the piece, however, does the outlet ponder that engagement among conservatives might be because the liberal censors who previously owned and operated Twitter were kicked to the curb when Musk took over.
Maybe it’s simple. Maybe conservatives have better, saner ideas that appeal to all Americans, not just fellow travelers in their political tribe, and when you suppress those ideas for years, there’s going to be an explosion once the platform is unshackled from the censorship overlords.
After all, conservative media flourished in the time before social media companies decided to tip the scales in favor of their preferred liberal agenda. Back in the early days of Facebook, this very outlet and others, such as Breitbart, saw massive amounts of web traffic. Conservative outlets were too much of a threat to the regime’s media apparatus that their pals in Big Tech had to jam down the brakes to stifle the competition in terms of traffic and winning over eyeballs and in the marketplace of ideas.
WaPo already cried crocodile tears in August when a “White Dudes for Harris” account was temporarily suspended on the platform. Now, they are salty about conservatives getting more engagement than them. If I had to guess, their sugar daddy, Jeff Bezos, probably has a bone to pick with Musk, and the newsroom might see it as their duty to take swipes at the MAGA X owner. But they should probably focus more on producing journalism that will appeal to people outside the BlueAnon bubble. And maybe try standing up against censorship, liberal or conservative, and not just complain when it seems to only affect them.
