Washington authorities recovered bodies of two men from Portland, Oregon, Friday night after they went missing in a national forest while searching for Bigfoot.
A family member reported the two missing around 1:00 a.m. on Christmas day after they did not return home as planned on Christmas Eve, Skamania County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said in a statement on social media. SCSO then launched a search-and-rescue operation for the missing 59-year-old and 37-year-old men.
“Over the course of three days, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Coordinator acquired over 60 volunteer search and rescue personnel, including canine, drone, and ground searching teams. Additionally, an air asset was acquired from the United States Coast Guard, based in Astoria, Oregon, to assist in the search utilizing F.L.I.R,” SCSO said.
Authorities used a Flock camera to locate a vehicle associated with the Oregonians, the statement said.
Upon locating the bodies of the adventurers, authorities determined that the two died from “exposure, based on weather conditions and ill-preparedness,” SCSO said. “The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize the exceptional volunteers who sacrificed time away from their families during Christmas to assist our agency with this mission,” law enforcement said. SCSO added that they extended their “deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the loved ones lost in this tragic incident.”
The drama did not end there. The same night that the search-and-rescue teams returned home from the grueling search, thieves broke into their storage yard “and stole nearly everything not bolted down from our equipment trailers,” authorities said in a statement on social media.
