You can never have enough golf! And the IOC gets that!
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Wednesday that multiple new opportunities to win medals are being plugged into several sports at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
One of those sports is our beloved golf, which will for the first time ever include a mixed-team event that will go along with the regular men’s and women’s tournaments. “The mixed events are a real true embodiment of gender equality − men and women competing in the same team, on the same field of play for their country,” said IOC sports director Kit McConnell in a press conference. “We’ve seen the real success of these (mixed-gender events). They bring something incredibly special for the athletes involved.”
As far as the format for the mixed-team event, that’s still being worked out. However, it’s been proposed before by the International Golf Federation of having a competition that would feature 16 teams with two players each. The event would take place across 36 holes, and it would also have a round of four-ball play and a round of foursomes.
Teams would be picked based on the 120 individuals (60 men and 60 women) that are already playing in the men’s and women’s tournaments, with the Olympic Golf Ranking being the basis.
