Hungarian police announced the arrest of an Irishman on Thursday less than 24 hours after he allegedly murdered an American female tourist amid intimate activity.
Budapest Metropolitan Police (BRFK) identified the accused as L.T. M., 37, according to a statement released Saturday. L.T. M. had been dancing in clubs with his alleged victim Tuesday after which they both went to L.T. M.’s rented apartment in Budapest, the police said. The victim, whom the police identified as Kenzie, then allegedly disappeared. The police declared her missing and launched an investigation.
A GoFundMe set up for the victim’s family identified her as Mackenzie Michalski of Fredonia, New York. Michalski was last seen at roughly 10 p.m., Nov. 4 in Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, according to the fundraiser. She did not arrive for her flight Tuesday to Amsterdam and her belongings were left in her Airbnb after checkout time.
Friends and family told the U.S. Embassy Michalski was missing on Tuesday, according to 7 News WKBW. (RELATED: US Citizen Indicted For Allegedly Throwing Two Tourists Off Cliff, Raping And Killing One In Germany)
The fundraiser has surpassed its $35,000 goal.
Reviewing surveillance video footage, the police spotted L.T. M. and Michalski at several parties and noticed “[s]everal suspicious circumstances” that suggested the female tourist could have been killed, according to the BRFK.
The police then arrested L.T. M. Wednesday at his rented apartment. They found additional evidence of the alleged crime. L.T.M. allegedly straightened up his apartment, hid Michalski’s corpse in his wardrobe and left to acquire a suitcase. On his return, He then placed Michalski’s body in the suitcase and drove about 108 miles southwest of Budapest to a wooded area near the village of Szigliget on the north shore of Lake Balaton where he dumped the suitcase with the body in it, according to the police.
The BRFK shared a photograph of the suitcase alongside other pieces of evidence of Michalski’s alleged murder.
L.T. M. admitted to the crime but claimed it was not purposeful, according to the BRFK.
The police also released a video showing his arrest. The video also showed the suspect leading investigators to the lakeside area where he allegedly hid Michalski’s body.
A State Department spokesperson confirmed an arrest to 7 News WKBW. Michalski’s family and friends confirmed her death to the outlet and thanked American and Hungarian authorities for promptly investigating the matter.
Budapest police alleged that L.T. M. searched the following phrases online: “Do pigs really eat dead bodies,” “Texas woman killed by a wild boar,” “Wild boar sighting in Lake Balaton coastal towns,” “What happens after a person is reported missing,” “How do the police handle missing person cases?” and “How reliable is the police in Budapest?”
“Suck it. Captured within 24 hours!” the BRFK wrote.
